The start of a new season means starting a new care regime to keep your windows clean and in top-notch condition – even during the summer.
By taking good care of your windows, you increase their lifespan and efficiency and lessen the chances of needing to get them repaired or replaced entirely. If you practice these precautionary tips and tricks, you could actually be preventing major window repair in the future. All it takes is a little extra care to your window panes and frames.
Inspect Window Seams
After a long, harsh and cold winter, the first thing you should do is inspect the seams for leaks or cracks. When there are points of entry for air, dirt and water, it can lead to more damage. Keeping your windows caulked helps to keep moisture problems down and helps with energy efficiency.
Washing Window Panes
Secondly, wash your window panes. During the summer, you’ll want to let light and warmth in, and window panes that have been smudged and dirtied up from inclement weather can be pretty unsightly. By using a streak-free glass cleaning solution, be sure to thoroughly wash the glass on both sides.
Prevent/Stop the Growth of Mildew
It’s common for mildew to begin growing on windows, especially if they’re older. Where moisture accumulates, mildew will grow – which is precisely why it’s so important to check your window seams for these types of leaks and cracks. A mixture of bleach, laundry detergent and water serves as an effective home-remedy solution for wiping mildew away.
Window Screen Care
Don’t forget to take good care of your screens too! Especially during the summer when you’re likely to crack windows open and have exposure directly to screens, you’ll want to make sure it’s in prime condition. Remove your screens and scrub them with a non-abrasive brush to remove any dirt, debris and/or bugs.
